About Toronto

More than 200 years ago, we were known to the Huron people as Toronto, a word that meant "meeting place." In 1793, when British settlers arrived they named the town, York. In 1834, they realized that the Hurons were right. It was a meeting place, a crossroads of cultures; Toronto has been our name ever since.

Toronto is the largest city in Canada with a diverse population of over 3 million people. Toronto's multi-cultural environment is a wonderful example for the world to see. Our city is large and wide with beautiful parks, beaches and islands for all to enjoy.

Climate in Toronto

Toronto has four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. The climate changes from month to month depending on the season. August is usually the hottest month while February is the coldest.

Spring (Mid-March to June)
Spring is dry and comfortable with some rain. Students are advised to bring their umbrellas, a light jacket and long pants. The temperature will vary between 10 degrees Celsius to 20 degrees Celsius. Boots are not necessary.

Summer (June to September)
Toronto's summers are hot and mostly dry. We do have the occasional day that is humid. The temperature ranges from 25 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius. Shorts and T-Shirts are advisable during the summer which runs from June to September.

Fall (October to November)
The Fall is a beautiful season with the trees changing colour and the landscape changing. The evenings tend to be cold but the days can reach up to 15 degrees Celsius. Jackets, gloves and hats may be required.

Winter (December to February)
Toronto's winters are getting warmer with only the occasional snow-storm. On average the temperature is around 0 degrees Celsius. In January, Toronto may get some snow so boots, heavy jacket, scarf and gloves are required.

The TTC

Toronto has one of the best public transportation systems in Canada. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) offers ONE PRICE for traveling anywhere in Toronto on buses, streetcars or subways.

Connect recommends that you purchase a METROPASS when you arrive in Toronto. The monthly pass will allow you to travel anywhere in Toronto quickly and easily.

The GO Train
If you live outside the Toronto area, you can still study at Connect! Take the GO Train to Union Station where you can walk (about 15 minutes) or take the subway (about 5 minutes) to Connect.

The Toronto Islands
A 5-minute ferry ride takes you to the spectacular Toronto Islands! An amazing park where you can go biking, roller-blading or just picnic beside the lake. A must-see place to visit while in Toronto. The ferry to the Toronto Islands is only a 10-minute walk from Connect.

The Beaches
Toronto has a long, beautiful beach. It stretches around Lake Ontario. People enjoy walking along the boardwalk, sunbathing, fishing, canoeing, boating, and more. The Beaches area of Toronto is a 20-minute streetcar ride from Connect.

High Park The largest park in Toronto. It is a fantastic place to relax and enjoy Canada's nature. You can enjoy swimming, jogging, and tennis. There is even a small zoo in High Park.

The CN Tower
The tallest free-standing building in the world is the most famous attraction in Toronto. It stands over 533 metres high with a revolving restaurant and an amazing glass floor. A must-see when visiting Toronto.
