SUMMER TEEN PROGRAM

Traveling abroad to a foreign country gives students the unique opportunity to improve their skills while opening their minds. Canada is a safe and exciting country for students.

The Connect Teen Program is held at Ryerson University in the heart of Toronto. It is within walking distance of City Hall, Museums, CN Tower and the Eaton’s Shopping Centre. Ryerson University is famous for its modern and progressive facilities. The program is available in July and August. The program starts July 7, 2008.

The Connect program is available for teens aged 11 years old to 17 years old. All instruction and tours will be conducted in English in order to provide the maximum exposure to the language and culture. Additional workshops in the afternoon, including sports, arts and crafts, educational tours, sightseeing tours and English activities are included!
Students study for 4 hours per day, Monday to Friday: Grammar, Conversation, Pronunciation and Canadian Studies. All courses were designed for Connect exclusively. Children will be divided into different levels based on their age and ability. A short test on the first day will be given to students to check their levels.

A certificate is provided at the end of the program for all participants.

Age Groups                        
Students will be separated into classes according to their age. The three groups will not be integrated into the same classes.

  • 11,12 and 13 year olds
  • 14 and 15 year olds
  • 16 and 17  year olds

Connect may move students up to a higher age group if a student’s English level is strong enough.

Grammar Class – 1 hour per day
Students enjoy  grammar, reading, writing and spelling skills. Topics include past simple vs. present prefect, writing daily journals, how to use prepositions and more.

Conversation Class – 1 hour per day
Through games and songs students improve their speaking, listening and pronunciation skills. Topics include: going to the restaurant, watching TV and movies in English or building English vocabulary.

Pronunciation – 1 hour per day
We focus on reducing the accent of the student through various pronunciation activities. Topics include: ch sounds, l vs r, p vs f, j vs y, intonation practice and linking practice.  

Canadian Studies – 1 hour per day
Students learn about Canadian culture such as our national song, the different unique features of our provinces, our government system and Canadian customs vs. American customs.

Student Journal
Students will keep a written journal of the time in Canada both as an exercise and a diary of their life experiences.
Accommodation Options
Two Options are available. Their features are listed below:

Homestay
Stay with a Canadian family and learn more English! Brothers and sisters or friends can live together in the same homestay family.
  • Less than 40 minutes to the Campus. (transportation to and from the school not included in the package price)
  • 3 meals a day
  • Private room

Dormitory

  • Stay at the Ryerson University Residence in downtown Toronto.
    Students can walk to school
  • 24 hour security
  • 24 hour supervision and evening activities with Connect staff on-site
  • Private room or Twin Rooms available
  • Washroom facilities are located on each floor and shared with residents on each floor
  • Buffet-style restaurant available on campus. Breakfast and dinner is included. Lunch will be a “boxed lunch” which includes, for example, sandwich, apple, cookies and a drink.
  • Curfew or “Lights Out” rules will be strictly enforced by Connect staff.
  • Kitchen facilities are available on each floor. The kitchens are equipped   with sink, fridge, microwave and stove. Students must have their own cooking utensils
  • There is an athletic club which has daily and monthly fees
  • Students who bring laptops can get Internet access in their rooms for nominal fees
  • Bed linens are provided and are changed weekly. Towels and toiletries are not provided and students should bring these items with them
  • Laundry machines are located in the residence. Laundry machines are coin operated. Each load costs $2.00 to wash and $2.00 to dry. (fees subject to change)
  • Please note: due to limited space, the Dormitory Option should be booked as soon as possible.


Teen Activity Program
Our afternoon and weekend activities are jam-packed full of exciting events for teens to enjoy. Students study for 4 hours in the morning and after lunch begin the activity program. The activity program, from Monday to Friday, runs from 2:00 pm to 5:00pm.

The purpose of the afternoon activities is to give students a chance to use their English in real-life situations under the guidance of our staff and counsellors. Also, the Activity Program gives students a chance to make friends from all over the world!


Afternoon Activities
Afternoon activities include a BBQ on Toronto Island where participants, staff and teachers can begin to get to know each other. Travel to the top of Toronto and enjoy an incredible view at the CN Tower, the tallest free-standing structure in the world. Students visit many exciting local attractions.

Saturday Activities

Our Saturday trips are equally exciting. Saturday trips are included in the price and provide an added learning experience as well as a chance to see Canada.  Participants enjoy a fantastic trip to Niagara Falls, a wonder of the world! Enjoy a day at Canada's Wonderland!

Trip to Niagara Falls

One of the most popular activities we offer for our Teen Programs is the trip to Niagara Falls! Niagara Falls is the greatest natural wonder in Canada. It is only a 90-minute drive to Niagara. Students to spend a full day learning about Niagara Falls! Many students enjoy taking the "Maid of the Mist" that takes you right next to the Falls.

Trip to Wonderland
Canada's Wonderland is Canada's largest amusement park! It is a fantastic trip where students can make friends and have a relaxing time.

Optional Montreal and Quebec Trip
An Optional weekend trip to Montreal and Quebec can be arranged. Please contact us for details and dates.

Group Tours
Connect is happy to accept Group Tours to any of our year-round or summer programs. We define a Group Tour as 12 or more people (excluding the leader). We offer free English classes, free accommodation and free admission to all activities for the Group Leader.
Connect must be informed at least 30 days before the arrival of the group the total number of students and leaders joining the tour.

Right to Substitute
From time to time, certain events occur beyond our control including construction, poor weather, operating times and schedules. Connect reserves the right to change, cancel or modify accommodation, transportation, activities or any other feature that is disrupted to ensure the quality of the program is maintained.
Connect will try and limit changes but no refunds can be given when substitutions occur.
